How to Read a Wine Label Without Googling Every Word

Because wine should be complex, not confusing.

Most wine labels feel like they’re written in a secret code. But you don’t need to speak fluent sommelier to figure out what’s in the bottle. You just need to know a few key things.

💬 “Dry”

No, it doesn’t mean the wine will make you thirsty.
It means not sweet. Most wines you see on shelves (and in your Winc box) are dry unless they’re labeled otherwise.

🍒 “Tannins”

That slightly dry, grippy feeling in your mouth after sipping red wine? Those are tannins.
More tannins = bolder, more structured wines. Less tannins = smoother, easier drinking.

🌍 Old World vs. New World

Old World = Europe (think earthy, subtle)
New World = everywhere else (think bold, fruity)

👃 “Notes of…”

You’re not drinking a bottle of blackberries and leather, obviously. It’s just what it smells and tastes like. Wine tasting notes describe aroma, not ingredients.

🔢 ABV

Short for Alcohol By Volume. Lower ABV (11–12%) = lighter and easy-drinking. Higher (14%+) = stronger, bolder, and maybe have some food with it.

Bottom line? The label gives you clues, but your taste buds are the final judge.
